MOONRISE KINGDOM (2012) FILM ANALYSIS

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Released in 2012, Moonrise Kingdom Written and Directed by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola is a Comedic-Drama film that is crafted with authentic drama and some contemporary flavors. The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for best original screenplay.

Basically, Moonrise Kingdom is an adventure movie that breathes the air of freedom and curiosity. The film can be described as a coming of age story, and here Wes Anderson emphasizes the coming of age through his quirky characters and comedic dialect. This film also showcases the rebellion and outlandish maturity of two introverted teens, desperately searching for an accepting world, family and relationship.

The Moonrise Kingdom revolves around the story of two kids, Sam who is a 12-year-old orphan who is also an expert in scouting, and Suzy, who is fierce and quirky. Anderson defines the identities of these two stroppy, rebellious characters by fabricating adult-like humor and scenes dramatized by 12-year-olds. Sam and Suzy both have some dissimilar reasons for their depression but they have a similar way of coping with it. So having met briefly the summer before, Sam and Suzy became pen pals. They loved each other and were trying to escape reality by planning to run away from the wild. However, they managed to run away together at the beginning of the film.

The film has a lot of hilarious moments which have been framed very well and there is not even a single dull moment in here. I love Bill Murray’s character in this film a lot. Personally, I feel that his character in this film is the funniest because he just works so well and the way he says some things by just standing in a place. He is awkwardly funny and I totally love this thing about him. The dialogues of the film are very fresh and clever as well. You can see the young kids in the movie acting or behaving like grownups, and doing adult things is also kind of funny. Moonrise Kingdom had some shocking and surprising scenes as well which I was not expecting but it was great overall. The film’s entire emotional structure is riding on these two kids and they have performed fantastically here. Their chemistry in the film was very good and it seemed like they were directed very well. The movie had the right amount of emotions. There was the right amount of quirkiness and the right amount of sadness as well. I feel the Moonrise Kingdom is appealing because it tackles and deals with serious issues in a fairly innocent manner.

Speaking in the direction here, Wes Anderson has immaculately framed the movie and beautifully framed the zooms, the pans, everything is very smooth and the camera also glides very smoothly and flawlessly throughout the film. The colors used in the movie create a very nature-like setting, the tones of yellow, brown, green, basically, the movie has a soft diffused light and a warm tone which is very pleasing to the eyes. I really like the scenes where the beach is captured beautifully and the vintage sort of background music just makes it perfect. I feel the director did a great job by directing the movie because it takes you to a different and quirky world which makes you feel connected.

I liked this film a lot! This film was funny, clever and witty. I feel this movie is very different and interesting, and it is not like the same old thing that we have watched a hundred times. It is really great to see a film like this because it is really entertaining. The Moonrise Kingdom is not only beautiful but is also aesthetically pleasing which brings you back to a simpler time, a culmination between adult awareness and childhood innocence.

Thank You!
